Plastic roads are a great solution for the current circumstances. It tackles the issue of climate change by providing a useful outlet to plastic that takes years to decompose otherwise. Moreover, roads made out of plastic are expected to be 51% stronger. Pakistan has decided to build its first plastic road in the capital city. The movement has taken place after collaboration with several private enterprises including Coca-Cola Pakistan and Afghanistan, and TeamUp / National Incubation Centre (NIC), alongside the Capital Development Authority who has contributed to the “World Without Plastic” program.

Islamabad’s Ataturk Avenue will be recarpeted and using almost 8 tones of plastic bottles which will also be mixed with road construction material.  Recycling plastic bottles can have a great impact on the environment. Although new in Pakistan, this technology has already been implemented around the world. The partnership MoU was signed at the TeamUp (NIC) office at Islamabad.

Rana Shakeel Asghar (Member of Finance & Environment CDA) who also signed the MoU on behalf of CDA said that,

“We believe in a clean and green Pakistan, but we also believe in working with each other to create results”

The VP and General Manager of Coca-Cola Pakistan-Afghanistan, Fahad Ashraf, also took the opportunity to share his thoughts,

“This idea provides a breakthrough solution to bring back plastic waste into the productive economy. And we also want to focus on building a community around the idea and the innovation itself.”

Representative of TeamUp (NIC), Parvez Abbasi, also commented saying,

“We were keen to lead this because most of the startups and projects here are guided by the Sustainable Development Goals.”
