In a recent development, the University of Karachi (KU) and a subsidiary of the Federal Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication known by the name of Ignite have signed an MoU to develop a Centre of Excellence in Animation. It has been decided that a sum of Rs2 billion will be spent on the establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Animation.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Prof Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, along with Asim Shahryar, CEO of Ignite. The facility will be established in an area of 28,000 square feet at the Sheikh Zayed Islamic Centre of Karachi University. The Center of Excellence will comprise an incubator, a production studio, a training facility, and a co-working space that would further help to promote animation, game development, and visual effects in Pakistan.
Federal IT and Telecommunication Minister, Syed Amin ul Haq, spoke on the occasion saying that the animation industry worldwide is expected to double in the coming decade or so. He also added that it is crucial for the Pakistani economy to excel in this field to match the standards around the world. He also added that Pakistan has huge potential in this industry, the skill can be polished through incubation and acceleration programs that could help these businesses develop into successful entities.
