According to Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) project would be built on the same foundation as Lahore’s Orange Line Metro Train.
The Minister was writing these remarks while leading a preparatory meeting for a combined group of members on transportation architecture, including officials from the CPEC Authority, the National Highway Authority, the Gwadar Port Authority, and senior officials from the Ministry of Ministry Planning and Railways.
Ahsan Iqbal also expressed his dissatisfaction with the ML-1 project’s delay.
He added that the project should have begun in 2018, but the delay has resulted in a significant financial loss to the national exchequer.
The minister was also asked to assess the expense of a 250 km/h track for the project’s future feasibility. He also instructed railway officials to expedite the ML-1 project.
The KCR project
In September 2021, former Prime Minister Imran Khan laid the groundwork for the long-awaited Karachi Circular Railway project.
The Public-Private Partnership Authority (P3A) authorized the new Karachi Circular Railway project earlier this year. The new KCR is being developed through a public-private collaboration at the cost of Rs220 billion.
Karachi Circular Railway planned to build a 43-kilometer-long world-class economic mass transit system employing environmentally friendly electric trains.
The project calls for the building of flyovers and underpasses along the Karachi Circular Railway line to eliminate 22-level crossings. The project will allow the KCR train to move freely.
