In a recent development, twenty-five-year-old Komal Ali Shah has been selected for the Hiroshima-ICAN Academy on Nuclear Weapons and Global Security 2021. She is the first Pakistani to become part of the program out of 41 other participants. Komal Ali Shah is also the first woman that has been selected for the course.
The ICAN is a massive campaign that focuses on mobilizing civil society around the world and encourages the prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons. Through this particular program, ICAN empowers and nurtures global leaders who work towards nuclear disarmament and can make concrete contributions towards a more peaceful and secure world.
Komal spoke regarding her selection saying,
“I would enhance the discussion by encouraging campaigns about nuclear disarmament from an educational perspective”
She also added that the humanitarian perspective is left out when forming nuclear policies. Komal would also be researching environmental hazards around the testing sites of nuclear weapons.
