The biggest tech company that has Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus under its wing operated under “Facebook” since its inception in 2014. After 17 years, Facebook’s corporate entity has now changed its name to Meta. Facebook’s Founder Mark Zuckerberg announced the change earlier this week during the company’s AR/VR-focused Connect event. The title was shared with the world which captures the company’s vision – to build the metaverse.
“To reflect who we are and what we hope to build, I am proud to announce that starting today, our company is now Meta. Our mission remains the same — it’s still about bringing people together. Our apps and our brands — they’re not changing either,” he added, “From now on, we’re going to be metaverse-first, not Facebook-first.”
Facebook’s announcement to change its name to meta comes weeks after the company was in hot waters when an ex-employee leaked documents that suggested Facebook’s shortcomings in the past few years. The change in name will help facebook steer away from the negative headlines that have been affecting its image in the recent past.
The groundwork to build the metaverse has been in the pipeline since July this year when Mark himself announced that Facebook was betting it all on the metaverse. The following month Facebook announced its VR application with an incredible amount of enthusiasm – something which seemed a bit too much for a small application. In September through a blog post called “Building the Metaverse Responsibly,” Facebook made an announcement about the $50 million funds which was dedicated to investing in research and claimed to develop the product responsibly.
This month the corporate entity hired 10,000 employees to build the metaverse platform. Soon after Facebook announced the name change which seemed like a move to distance itself from all the controversy that was built around “Facebook” in the past few months.
